Holiday Stress: Eating Healthy


If you are feeling stressed during the holiday season, you are not alone. In fact, according to one survey, over 60 percent of people say they find the holidays to be “somewhat” or “very” stressful.


For many people, some of the very things that make this time of year so special can also make it stressful. From traveling to visit with family to navigating crowded stores in search of the perfect gifts, the holidays can be filled with challenges as well as joys.


During stressful moments, eating can seem like a quick and easy source of comfort and distraction. But unhealthy eating during the holidays can just make stress worse, leading to weight gain, lethargy, and other issues. 


Here are some tips to help you continue to eat healthy, even when facing holiday stress.


  1. Bring Healthy Snacks to Work. During the holidays, it’s common to find tempting snacks at the office, so it’s smart to keep a stash of healthy foods at your desk to avoid the constant temptation, according to Real Simple.  Eating a piece of fruit, a healthy snack bar or another high-fiber food can help you avoid feelings of hunger, which will make you less likely to indulge in the chocolate or cookies being offered in the office.
  2. Plan Your Indulgences. Be selective about what holiday treats you choose to indulge in. “Instead of wasting calories on foods that you can have at any time of the year, pick items that are truly special and unique to the season, like your grandmother's candied yams or your daughter's first batch of Christmas cookies,” says Real Simple.
  3. Be Mindful When You Eat. When you are eating for comfort rather than hunger, you are engaging in what the American Heart Association calls “mindless eating.” The organization recommends slowing down and paying attention to what you are eating. Be sure enjoy each bite and put your fork down while chewing.     
  4. Find Another Way to Relax. It’s key to take time for yourself during the hectic holiday season.
