The older you get, the harder it can be to lose weight, because research shows that in women, metabolism declines by an average of two percent per decade, starting at age 20.

 

But there’s good news, too! You can increase your metabolism in some surprisingly simple ways — that don’t involve rigid diets or long cardio routines. In fact, there are some simple things you can do in the morning before you even start your day, that can help ensure your metabolism gets off to a strong start for the day ahead.

 

Here are five easy ways to increase your metabolism every morning:

 

Get Enough Sleep. It’s important to maintain regular sleep habits since irregular sleep patterns disrupt your metabolism, so begin your day by making sure you got enough to sleep the night before.

 

Start Your Day With Yoga: Dr. Oz says he starts his day with a 7-minute routine that includes yoga and a few strength-building exercises, noting that even a short yoga routine can double your metabolic rate if you do it first thing in the morning. That’s a good incentive to do some morning sun salutations!

 

Drink Coffee or Green Tea. Caffeine can help jump start your metabolism, which is a great reason to enjoy a cup of Joe or green tea in the morning.

 

Eat Enough:  Eating too little can backfire and cause your metabolism to slow down! According to Prevention, when you eat less than you need for basic biological function (about 1,200 calories for most women), your metabolism begins to slow down.  Make sure you eat enough to keep your metabolism moving - and that begins with breakfast.

 

Eat Protein in the Morning.  Another tip from Dr. Oz - since digesting protein takes up to seven times more energy than digesting carbohydrates or fat, start your day off with eggs or other protein-rich foods to get your metabolism moving in the morning.
