Why Breakfast Matters

Did you know that breakfast has an effect that’s unlike any other meal?  Research shows that eating breakfast within two hours of waking up in the morning can have an amazing array of benefits for your metabolism and health.

Breakfast has been associated with benefits including:

  • Protecting against heart disease
  • Lowering your risk of type 2 diabetes
  • Possibly enhancing mental acuity, including improved memory and attention
  • Lower risk for obesity
  • Increased level of physical activity

Miss breakfast and you are likely to miss out on these health benefits. People who skip breakfast are unlikely to make up their daily requirement for some vitamins and minerals that breakfast would have provided, according to Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Think you have no time for breakfast in the morning? Here are two simple solutions from Johns Hopkins:

  • Get up 15 minutes earlier – just a few extra minutes in the morning is all that you need to find the time for a quick healthy breakfast.
  • Plan ahead – just as you may lay out your clothing the night before, choose what you are going to eat for breakfast before the next morning, even doing some of the prep work, such as cutting up some fruit,  in the evening.

What’s on Your Morning Menu?

Of course, it’s not just that you eat breakfast that matters, it’s what you eat that will really make the difference in your waistline and your well-being.

Make sure you are getting a variety of foods, including whole grains, protein, fruits and veggies. Yes, bonus points if you eat veggies with your morning meal! Venus is a big fan of smoothies and green juices, and ensures there are lots of vegetables, including kale, carrots and cucumbers, in her smoothies, with a little fruit. She also adds in some protein powder to balance out the beverage. Oatmeal is another healthy choice. Load it full of healthy toppings like nuts, fruits and seeds.

For mornings when you are short on time, there are lots of healthy bars and on-the-go items you can get at the grocery store and stock in your pantry, so you’ll always have something to grab and go. Just be sure to always read the nutrition labels before you buy, especially the sugar content, as too many packaged foods that purport to be healthy can in fact be packed with hidden sugar.

Once you’ve fueled up for the day with a healthy breakfast, you’ll be ready for a productive day ahead. Since breakfast is such an important part of your day, you should make sure to eat a healthy and feeling breakfast. Otherwise, you won’t have the energy and nutrients you need for the day.You need to eat a breakfast that is not just full of empty calories! If that is the case, you may not feel good after eating it. If you want your bowl of cereal, you can eat and apple with it or make sure to cook an egg. That way you are getting at least something healthy in!
